Carlyle's November Starts the Day the Campgrounds Close

October 22, 2026

Carlyle Lake's camping season ends this Sunday, November 1, and the town's own calendar picks up the next week. The rest of the month runs on two schedules. On the water it moves from campers to migrating waterfowl and the hunters who follow them. In town, events run from Ninth Street to the VFW hall on Franklin to City Park on Lake Road. Both schedules peak on the same Saturday, November 14.

Here is how the month lays out, starting with this weekend.

This Weekend: Ninth Street, Then the Planters

The town calendar starts before the lake's does. On Friday, October 30, Carlyle's Business Trick or Treat takes over downtown, and the City Council voted to close Ninth Street between Franklin and Fairfax so businesses have extra room to set up, the Carlyle Union Banner reported. The city's event calendar lists it for 3:30 to 5 p.m. this year. Last year it ran 3 to 5 p.m., and participating shops put an orange ghost in the window, the Union Banner noted. Its photo from last year shows trick-or-treaters stopped at Flowers by Tess.

Saturday, October 31 starts and ends in town. At 9 a.m., Carlyle in Bloom is cleaning up the planters along Route 127 and downtown and is asking volunteers to bring hand shovels. Residential trick-or-treating runs from 6 to 8 p.m. that evening for children 12 and younger.

Sunday, November 1: The Campgrounds Close, Except One Loop

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' 2026 season schedule has the lake's camping season closing in stages, and two of the closures land on Sunday.

  • Coles Creek Campground closed September 27.
  • Boulder Campground closed October 12.
  • Dam West Campground closes November 1.
  • Dam East-McNair Campground, North and South loops, close November 1.
  • Dam East-McNair Spillway Loop stays open year-round.

The Corps' reservations page says Spillway Loop sites 33 through 47 stay open from November through March, so a few sites below the dam remain available all winter.

The state park on the west shore closes on the same day. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources' closures list, updated October 1, shows Eldon Hazlet State Park's north-end campsites 227 through 328 and shower buildings 1 and 2 closing November 1. Campsites 67 through 226 and shower building 3 stay open until December 7. Those are seasonal campground closures, not a closure of the whole park, and IDNR asks visitors to check with the site before a trip.

On the Water After November 1: Birds, Then Hunters

As the campers leave, the birds and hunters arrive. The Corps describes Carlyle Lake as a mid-migration resting area for waterfowl and other migratory birds, with six Watchable Wildlife Sites around the shoreline. IDNR lists bald eagles, ospreys, cormorants, great blue herons, shorebirds and songbirds among the birdwatching subjects at Carlyle Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area. The state divides that area into Westside, Eastside, Flooded Dead Timber and Open Water units. It describes the Open Water Area as suited to scenic boating, birdwatching and hunting, so in late fall the same water serves all three.

The hunting calendar is also set. Carlyle Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area is one of the South Zone sites open for the youth waterfowl hunt on Saturday, November 7, with a second youth date on January 30, 2027. The state's South Zone season table opens regular duck season on November 14. It runs through December 6, pauses, then reopens December 19 and runs through January 24, 2027. Regular Canada goose season runs November 14 through January 31, 2027.

Those dates also govern access to parts of the shoreline. Under the site rules for Carlyle Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area, the sub-impoundment area is closed to trespass starting seven days before waterfowl season, with an exception for youth-hunt participants. Areas designated as waterfowl rest areas are off-limits from two weeks before regular duck season opens until Canada goose season closes. If you walk, paddle or birdwatch on that side of the lake, the IDNR site page has the current rules before you head out.

Saturday, November 14: Two Openers on One Day

On November 14 the lake and the town both open their biggest event of the month.

That same morning, Friends of Case-Halstead Public Library meets from 10 to 11 a.m. at the library.

The Weeknights All Month

From the first Tuesday of the month to the night before Thanksgiving, the calendar stays busy on weeknights. The Case-Halstead Library November calendar runs a steady schedule in the Maddux Room:

  • Preschool Story Time, Tuesdays from 9:15 to 10 a.m. on November 3, 10, 17 and 24, with alphabet-themed stories and crafts.
  • Carlyle Lego Club, November 10, 6 to 7 p.m.
  • Game Night, November 10 and 24 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Book Club, November 25, 7 to 9 p.m., the night before Thanksgiving.

On Wednesday, November 11, the city calendar lists a county-wide Veterans Day program in Breese, with a service at St. Dominic's Church followed by a meal, program and parade. The listing says the public is welcome.

Friday, November 27: The Park Takes Over

The month ends at Carlyle City Park, 1090 Lake Road, the night after Thanksgiving. The Christmas in Carlyle parade steps off at 6:30 p.m. and follows this route:

  1. Start at 11th and Fairfax.
  2. Head east to 5th Street.
  3. Turn north to City Park.

Fireworks follow at 7:30 p.m. Scott Masonic Lodge is serving food and a kettle-corn stand is set up. Tess Jackson and Debbie Cohoon are the contacts for parade entries. The rain date is Sunday, November 29.

The same night, Lights in the Park turns on at dusk. It stays open from dusk to 11 p.m. each night through January 6, and you can drive or walk the loop. The city suggests tuning your radio to 90.1 FM for the Dancing Trees music. The display is free, with donations accepted. The city describes it as thousands of lights plus animated features and the dancing trees. City Park sits on the lake end of town, so a month that opened with campgrounds closing on the water closes with a crowd on the shore.

What's Being Built While the Lake Rests

The lake is quieter in November, but construction in town keeps going. On October 14, Carlyle Animal Hospital broke ground on a new 5,000-square-foot building on William Road, the Union Banner reported. Completion is targeted for May 2027. The paper also reported that a new veterinarian, Dr. Wells, joins the practice in November.

At its early-October meeting, the City Council also took up a TIF proposal from Mioux Florist & Greenhouses to expand its greenhouse and retail garden center on Livingston Street. The proposal puts the private investment at $418,150, and the project is slated for completion in late November or early December 2026. The council authorized the city administrator and mayor to begin negotiations with both businesses, according to the Union Banner. Mioux's current shop is at 1211 Jefferson St.
